About Yvonne

Yvonne Elce is a Professor in the Department of Health Management at the Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island. She earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph, and is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Elce joined the Atlantic Veterinary College in 2020 as a Professor of Large Animal Surgery. Her professional career includes academic positions at veterinary schools in North America and the United Kingdom, as well as experience in private practice. She graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1997, followed by an internship in large animal medicine and surgery in the United States. Elce contributes to institutional governance as a member of the University of Prince Edward Island Animal Care Committee, representing Health Management, with her term ending August 31, 2027.

Elce's academic interests and research focus on large animal surgery, equine sarcoids and cutaneous melanomas, tracheal collapse in donkeys, and mentor-mentee relationships in veterinary medicine. Her publications include "Tracheal collapse rates in Kenyan working cart and pack donkeys" (Equine Veterinary Journal, 2025), "Intratumoural tigilanol tiglate in the multicentre treatment of equine sarcoids and cutaneous melanomas" (Equine Veterinary Journal, 2025), "The mentor-mentee relationship, addressing challenges in veterinary medicine together" (Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice, 2021), "Fluticasone/salmeterol reduces remodelling and neutrophilic inflammation in severe equine asthma" (Scientific Reports, 2017), and "Gabapentin for the treatment of neuropathic pain in a pregnant mare" (Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 2007). She serves as Associate Editor for the Veterinary Surgery section of Frontiers in Veterinary Science and has participated in expert panels on topics such as the use of splints and casts in horses. Elce's work supports teaching DVM students and clinical training in large animal surgery at the Atlantic Veterinary College.
