Dr. Yves-Heng Lim is a Senior Lecturer in Security Studies at Macquarie University’s School of International Studies, Discipline of Security Studies, Faculty of Arts. He serves as Discipline Chair of the School of International Studies. From 2016 to 2024, he held the role of Learning and Teaching Coordinator and Director of Education and Employability for the Department of Security Studies and Criminology, now the Discipline of Security Studies. A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Lim has contributed to curriculum development, teaching courses such as Security Policy Analysis: Current and Emerging Issues, Defence Analysis and Net Assessment, and strategic simulation units including PICT8950 Strategic Simulation and PICT8965 Decision Making, Scenario Planning and Simulation. He supervises projects on traditional security in the Indo-Pacific and participates in international conferences on topics like Taiwan security and grey zone tactics.
Lim’s research focuses on balance of power in the Indo-Pacific, China’s grand strategy and military affairs—particularly naval strategy—and international relations theory, including realism and power transition theory. He authored the book China’s Naval Power: an Offensive Realist Approach (Farnham: Ashgate Publishing, 2014). With over 20 peer-reviewed articles, 15 book chapters, 5 commissioned reports, and 3 website contributions, his publications appear in The Journal of Strategic Studies, Journal of Contemporary China, Contemporary Strategy, and Asian Security. Key works include “How (Dis)Satisfied is China? A power transition theory perspective” (Journal of Contemporary China, 2015), “Expanding the dragon’s reach: the rise of China’s anti-access naval doctrine and forces” (The Journal of Strategic Studies, 2017), “India–France convergence: redrawing the strategic map of the Indo-Pacific” (Australian Outlook, 2026, with Dalbir Ahlawat), and “055 Shades of Grey: operationalising the ICAD” (Australian Outlook, 2025, with Adam Lockyer and Courtney J. Fung). As Primary Chief Investigator for “A Multi-Factor Model of China's Security Strategy in East Asia” (2019-2021), Lim contributes to understanding great power competition and regional security dynamics.
