Professor Yue Rong is a Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences within the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Curtin University, Bentley, Western Australia. He received his B.E. degree in Electrical Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, in 1999, M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, in 2002, and Ph.D. degree (summa cum laude) in Electrical Engineering from Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany, in 2005. His early career included positions as Research Assistant at the Fraunhofer Institute of Microelectronic Circuits and Systems in 2001, with Nokia Ltd. from 2001 to 2002, Research Associate at the University of Duisburg-Essen from 2002 to 2005 and at Darmstadt University of Technology from 2005 to 2006, and Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of California, Riverside, from 2006 to 2007. He joined Curtin University in December 2007 as Lecturer, advancing to Senior Lecturer in 2010, Associate Professor in 2012, and full Professor since 2015.
Professor Rong's research specializations include signal processing for communications, wireless communications, underwater acoustic and optical wireless communications, machine learning, speech recognition, biomedical engineering, applications of linear algebra and optimization methods, and statistical and array signal processing. He has co-authored over 200 refereed journal and conference papers, including key publications such as 'Optimality of Diagonalization of Multi-Hop MIMO Relays' (IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, 2009), 'A Unified Framework for Optimizing Linear Non-Regenerative Multicarrier MIMO Relay Communication Systems' (IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, 2009), 'MIMO Relay' (book, Springer, 2018), and recent works on non-invasive coronary artery disease detection and underwater communication systems. His scholarship has earned over 5,000 citations. Notable awards include the 2010 Young Researcher of the Year Award from Curtin University's Faculty of Science and Engineering, Best Paper Awards at the 16th Asia-Pacific Conference on Communications (2010) and 3rd International Conference on Wireless Communications and Signal Processing (2011), and the Outstanding Editorial Board Member Award for IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing (2022). He served as Senior Area Editor of IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing from 2020 to 2024, Associate Editor from 2014 to 2018, Editor of IEEE Wireless Communications Letters from 2012 to 2014, and TPC member and chair for numerous IEEE conferences. Professor Rong has also led major grants from ARC Discovery Projects and Defence Science initiatives.
