About Yinni

Yinni Peng is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Hong Kong Baptist University, where she also serves as Programme Director for the Master of Social Sciences in Chinese Cultures and Societies. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, an M.A. in Sociology from Peking University, and a B.A. in Sociology from Peking University. Her professional career began as a Post-doctoral Fellow in the Department of Sociology at Hong Kong Baptist University from 2009 to 2010. She then served as Lecturer from 2010 to 2011 and Assistant Professor from 2011 to 2012 at Hong Kong Shue Yan University. Returning to Hong Kong Baptist University, she was Assistant Professor from 2012 to 2018 before her promotion to Associate Professor in 2018.

Dr. Peng's research specializations encompass migration, gender and family dynamics, digital technology and social media, labor politics, and qualitative research methods. She is co-author of the book Masculine Compromise: Migration, Family and Gender in China (University of California Press, 2016), which received the 2018 Best Book Award from RC 31 Sociology of Migration of the International Sociological Association and was selected as one of Sanlian Shudian's 2019 Annual Top 10 Good Books in its Chinese edition. Her extensive publication record includes peer-reviewed articles in leading journals such as British Journal of Sociology of Education, The Sociological Review, Sex Roles, Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, Gender & Society, The China Quarterly, and Human Relations. Notable publications are “When the halo of my overseas credentials disappeared: Chinese student returnees and their domestic employability” (2025), “Gendered parenting and conjugal negotiation over children’s organised extracurricular activities” (2024), “Gendered Division of Digital Labor in Parenting: A Qualitative Study in Urban China” (Sex Roles, 2022), “Bringing Children to the Cities: Gendered Migrant Parenting and the Family Dynamics of Rural-Urban Migrants in China” (2020), “Diversified Transnational Mothering via Telecommunication: Intensive, Collaborative, and Passive” (Gender & Society, 2013), and “Technologies of Power and Resistance: Production Regimes and Mobile Phone Usage among Migrant Factory Workers in South China” (The China Quarterly, 2013). As principal investigator, she has led research projects including “How is Digital Labor Practiced and Divided in the Family?”, “Student Return Migration from A Processual and Relational Perspective”, “When China’s Only Children Become Parents”, and “Trans-local Parenting”. Dr. Peng has contributed to academic governance through editorial board memberships on Gender & Society (2017–2019) and Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies (from 2019), and as Associate Editor for Gender, Work and Organization (2024–2029).
