Professor Xiaoshu Zhu serves as Head of Discipline for Health Sciences, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Paramedicine in the School of Health Sciences at Western Sydney University. She earned her PhD in Health from Western Sydney University in 2007, Master of Medicine in 1989, and Bachelor of Medicine in 1984, both from Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China. Before joining Western Sydney University in 1999, she held the position of Associate Professor at Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. As Director of the Academic Program and Senior Lecturer in the Chinese Medicine Program, Professor Zhu has been a key founding member contributing significantly to its growth. She also holds Adjunct Professor positions at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, and serves as the inaugural Practitioner Member of the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia. Her career spans teaching, research, and clinical practice across China, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Australia. Professor Zhu is a Working Editor for the Cochrane Menstrual Disorders and Subfertility Group and acts as an external academic monitor for Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand and University Tunku Abdul Rahman in Malaysia.
Professor Zhu's research focuses on Traditional Chinese Medicine within Health Science, particularly cancer support, mind-body therapies, women's health, and patient-reported outcomes through clinical research and systematic reviews. She has produced 78 research outputs, including peer-reviewed articles such as 'A systematic review on the traditional Chinese medicine body constitution in different types of cancer' (2025, European Journal of Integrative Medicine), 'Are published cancer care trial protocols with traditional Chinese medicine interventions concordant with SPIRIT-TCM extension 2018?: a scoping review' (2024, Integrative Cancer Therapies), and 'Baduanjin mind-body exercise for cancer-related fatigue: protocol for a remotely delivered randomized wait-list controlled feasibility study' (2024, Integrative Cancer Therapies). Notable Cochrane reviews include Chinese Herbal Medicine for Primary Dysmenorrhea (2009 Dr Bernard Lake Award winner) and for Menopausal Symptoms (2001 Cochrane Bursary). Her accolades also encompass the 2008 Award for the Best Research Paper at the AACMA Annual Conference, 2000 Asia 2000 Foundation Higher Education Exchange Program, and 1999 Dean's Award for New Employee of the Year. Professor Zhu supervises higher degree research students, participates in the School of Health Sciences Academic Executive Committee, leads projects like the longitudinal study on Chinese vascular surgeons, and maintains extensive international collaborations with institutions including Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, Beijing Cancer Hospital, and others.
