Dr. Xiaohong Zhang is a Professor and serves as Chair of the Department of Mathematics, Engineering, and Computer Science in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at West Virginia State University. Under her leadership, the department provides undergraduate programs such as the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, and Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, as well as a graduate program, the Master of Science in Computer Science. The department fosters an environment that combines rigorous theoretical training with practical skills, supported by small class sizes and dedicated faculty, preparing students for diverse careers in academia, industry, and technology sectors.
Dr. Zhang maintains accessible office hours for students, including sessions from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on select days and extended periods from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on others. She plays a key role in student support, serving as the contact for mathematics department scholarships requiring a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 for math majors. In her administrative capacity, Dr. Zhang has advanced departmental collaborations, notably expressing enthusiasm in 2022 for a partnership with Marshall University funded by the Governor’s Cyber Security Education grant to develop Cyber Security Centers for Critical Infrastructure. This initiative aims to bolster research programs and student opportunities, establishing a foundation for ongoing inter-institutional cooperation. Earlier, in 2011, she contributed to international recruitment efforts by participating in a Higher Education Policy Commission-sponsored trip to China and creating a promotional brochure in Chinese for West Virginia State University. Previously serving as Associate Professor, Dr. Zhang is recognized in the American Mathematical Society's Directory of Institutions as the department chair and has served as an accuracy reviewer for prominent mathematics textbooks, including College Algebra, 5th Edition by Stewart, Redlin, and Watson, and Calculus by Jon Rogawski.
