Winnifred Bryant, Ph.D., is a professor in the Biology Department at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She earned a B.S. in Biology from Shorter College in 1993, an M.S. in Zoology from Miami University (Ohio) in 1997, and a Ph.D. in Zoology from Miami University (Ohio) in 2000. Her research interests encompass endocrinology, reproductive physiology, human sexual biology, animal physiology, and systems neuroscience, with a specific focus on characterizing the role environmental estrogens play in the biology of breast and uterine cancer. Bryant authored the textbook Human Sexual Biology, designed for non-biology majors and utilized in University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire courses. She teaches courses such as Foundations II Biology and Systems Neuroscience.
Bryant has made significant contributions through student-faculty collaborative research, mentoring many students of color via the diversity mentoring program, and leading international learning experiences, including the Medical Breakthroughs in London travel seminar course during Winterim. In recognition of her achievements in advancing equity and inclusion for people of color within the University of Wisconsin System and broader communities, she received the 2021 Outstanding Women of Color in Education Award. Her scholarly work includes co-authored publications such as Cultured fish epithelial cells are a source of alarm substance (2017) and Modeling the Effects of Intracellular Anions on Membrane Potential (2019), along with numerous student-mentored projects on topics like the effects of triclosan and environmental estrogens on cancer cells. Colleagues respect her for substantial contributions to campus, scholarship, and student mentorship, often seeking her advice and counsel. Previously serving as Biology Department Chair, Bryant continues to influence the academic field through her dedication to teaching, research, and leadership in fostering future scholars and scientists.
