Willy Susilo is a Distinguished Professor and Australian Laureate Fellow at the School of Computing and Information Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences, University of Wollongong. He earned his PhD from the University of Wollongong in 2001, a Master of Computer Science from the same university, and a Bachelor of Engineering from Universitas Surabaya, Indonesia, with Summa Cum Laude honors. His research focuses on cybersecurity and privacy, and cryptography, with over 500 publications in journals and conference proceedings on these topics, garnering more than 26,000 citations. Notable contributions include work on short signature schemes incorporated into an IETF draft. He has co-authored books such as Introduction to Security Reduction (Springer, 2018), Advances in Cyber Security: Principles, Techniques, and Applications (Springer, 2019), and Cyber Security Meets Machine Learning (Springer, 2021). Susilo serves as Editor-in-Chief of Computer Standards & Interfaces (Elsevier) and Information (MDPI), Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Dependable and Secure Computing, and former Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security. He has been a program committee member for dozens of international conferences in cryptography and cybersecurity.
Susilo's career at the University of Wollongong began as a Lecturer in 2001, advancing through Senior Lecturer (2003-2005), Associate Professor (2006-2009), Professor (2009-2013), Senior Professor (2014-2021), to Distinguished Professor (2021-present). He directed the Centre for Computer and Information Security Research from 2005 and currently leads the Institute of Cybersecurity and Cryptology. As Head of the School of Computing and Information Technology from 2015 to 2025, he significantly elevated the school's research culture and performance, fostering national recognition and producing Australian Research Council Fellows. Previously, he headed the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering (2009-2010) and served as Deputy Director of the ICT Research Institute (2006-2008). His accolades include the Australian Laureate Fellowship (2023), ARC Future Fellowship (2009), 2024 Premier's Prizes in Engineering and Communications Technology, Fulbright Scholar (2026), University of Wollongong Alumni Award for Research and Scholarship (2024), Researcher of the Year (2016), Supervisor of the Year (2019), Vice-Chancellor's Award for Global Strategy (2020), and fellowships from IEEE (Computer Society, 2021), IET (2021), ACS, AAIA, and AIIA.
