About William

Professor William Ba-Thein serves as Director of the Clinical Research Unit and Professor at Shantou University Medical College. He received medical education from Myanmar, trained in Microbiology with a PhD from the University of Tsukuba, Japan, and completed a fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, USA. Prior to his current appointment, he worked at the University of Tsukuba and Azabu University in Japan, as well as Thammasat University in Thailand. He has served as academic and research supervisor for graduate students and exchange scholars from various universities and institutes in Asia. He is currently promoting evidence-based medicine, clinical research, healthcare safety culture, and professional ethics in the medical college and its affiliated hospitals.

His research interests include health literacy, healthcare safety, healthcare-associated infections, and regional public health issues. Affiliated with the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, he has contributed to studies on infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and public health surveillance. Key publications include "Pharmacopoeial quality of antimicrobial drugs in southern China: a cross-sectional study" (The Lancet Global Health, 2016), "Prior Knowledge, Older Age, and Higher Allowance Are Risk Factors for Self-Medication with Antibiotics among University Students in China" (PLOS ONE, 2012), "Sexual behaviors and awareness of sexually transmitted infections among Chinese university students" (Journal of Infection in Developing Countries, 2013), and "Healthcare-Associated Infections and Shanghai Clinicians" (PLOS ONE, 2014). With 29 research works accumulating over 700 citations, his scholarship has advanced understanding of antimicrobial stewardship, self-medication risks, and infection control. He teaches courses such as Infection and Immunity module (undergraduate, covering immunology, microbiology, healthcare-associated infections), Scientific Reasoning in Medicine series, Scientific Communications and Ethics (graduate), Evidence-based Practice of Medicine (clinicians and clinical students), and Undergraduate Research Training Program.
