About Wenying

Dr. Wenying (Wendy) Jiang is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Languages and Cultures within the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Queensland. A graduate of Qufu Normal University with a BA in 1988 and an MA in 1998 from China, she also earned an MA from the University of Luton in the UK in 2001 and a PhD from the University of Queensland in 2006. Her career began with over ten years teaching English at Taishan Medical University in China. She then shifted to teaching Chinese as a foreign language in English-speaking countries, holding positions at the University of Luton, the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Alberta in Canada, and the University of Western Australia before joining UQ.

As a specialist in Applied Linguistics, Dr. Jiang's research focuses on second language acquisition—particularly in Chinese—technology-enhanced language learning (TELL and CALL), task-based language teaching, intercultural communication, contrastive analysis between Chinese and English, and Chinese pedagogy. She has published extensively since 1992, with her monograph Acquisition of Word Order in Chinese as a Foreign Language (De Gruyter Mouton, 2009) held in 1226 libraries worldwide. Her article "Measurements of development of L2 written production: the case of Chinese L2" (Applied Linguistics, 2013) is widely cited and has influenced researchers globally, often acknowledged in conferences. Recent works include "Learners’ enjoyment in mobile task-based language learning: a longitudinal study on novice CFL learners in an Australian university" (Language Teaching Research, 2025, with Xiaoji Wang), "Parents’ planning, children’s agency and heritage language education: Re-storying the language experiences of three Chinese immigrant families in Australia" (Frontiers in Psychology, 2023, with Chunxuan Shen), "Exploring the affordances of WeChat for Chinese cultural knowledge learning among learners of Chinese in an international exchange program" (Computer Assisted Language Learning, 2022, with Xiaoji Wang), and "Remote Chinese Language Teaching at the University of Queensland During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Reflection from Australia" (2022 book chapter). She was commended for sustained excellence in teaching by UQ in 2018, appointed Guest Professor at Qilu University of Technology in China, and invited to speak at Peking University’s Expert Forum. Her work receives international recognition, with requests for publications from around the world.
