About Wee

Wee Tiong Seah is Professor in Education (Mathematics Education) in the Faculty of Education at the University of Melbourne. He holds a PhD and a Master's degree, both Coursework and Research, from Monash University. Before pursuing an academic career, he accumulated extensive experience in mathematics teaching and pastoral care across various school settings in Singapore. For more than 18 years, he has been involved in initial teacher education and in-service professional development at tertiary institutions throughout Victoria. He currently serves as Associate Dean (Global Engagement) and co-leader of the Mathematics, Science and Technology Education Group. From 2019 to 2021, he co-directed the University of Melbourne Numeracy R-3 Professional Development program, developed specifically for the South Australia Department for Education. He was a member of the Australian federal government’s Expert Advisory and Research Group and, in 2018, facilitated workshops for approximately 800 principals and school leaders at the invitation of the Victorian Department of Education. He also conducts collaborative research and consultancy activities in eight countries.

Professor Seah's research focuses on values and valuing pedagogies in mathematics education, mathematical wellbeing, affect-focused teaching practices, immigrant learners and teachers in mathematics, social justice, and cross-cultural influences on education policy. He coordinates a 19-country research consortium examining how values can support mathematics competences, foster teacher self-efficacy, and enable students to regulate mathematics anxiety. His scholarly contributions have received over 3,600 citations, with an h-index of 35. Key publications include "Values in Mathematics Textbooks: A View through Two Australasian Regions" (2000, with A.J. Bishop), "Values in mathematics teaching—The hidden persuaders?" (2011, with A. Bishop and C. Chin), "Values in Mathematics Education: Making Values Teaching Explicit in the Mathematics Classroom" (1999, with A. Bishop et al.), "Mathematics education and student values: The cultivation of mathematical wellbeing" (2010, with P. Clarkson and A. Bishop), and "Values in mathematics education: Its conative nature, and how it can be developed" (2019). He handles book and resource reviews for Mathematics Teacher Education and Development.
