Wayne Mullen serves as the Program Coordinator and Instructor for the Opticianry Diploma Program (DPOPTI) at Douglas College. The program, housed in the Faculty of Science and Technology's Vision & Hearing Technologies department, spans two years with 63 credits and trains students in eyeglasses, contact lenses, and refraction technologies. Classes occur three days per week, incorporating hands-on experience at the Douglas College Vision Care Centre on the Coquitlam campus. Mullen's office is located in room A3128, and he is the designated contact for program inquiries via phone at 604-777-6268.
Wayne Mullen also holds the position of Program Coordinator for the Hearing Aid Sciences Diploma Program (DPHEAR), a two-year, 60-credit program launched in September 2017—the first public diploma of its kind in British Columbia. He co-initiated the program with Michael March, both registered dispensing opticians and Hearing Instrument Practitioners, following his presentation to the Douglas College Education Council in May 2016. The curriculum covers hearing testing, hearing aid dispensing and programming, and patient counseling for hearing loss management, with practicums in the Hearing Clinic. Mullen represented Douglas College as an educator on the National Association of Canadian Optician Regulators (NACOR) committee, contributing to the National Competencies for Canadian Opticians (4th edition, October 2019). He has further engaged in college governance through Education Council discussions on program matters since at least 2012.
