Dr. Vu Vuong is a Research Fellow in the UWA Medical School at the University of Western Australia, where he is also affiliated with the UWA Centre for Child Health Research, part of The Kids Research Institute Australia. He holds the position of Senior Research Officer at The Kids Research Institute Australia (Telethon Kids Institute). Vuong completed his Doctor of Philosophy in Economics at the University of Western Australia, awarded on 29 July 2022, with a thesis entitled "Essays on Institutions, Health and Economic Development." Prior to his current roles, he served as a tutor for several economics courses at UWA, including Health Economics (ECON3205), Introductory Econometrics (ECON2271), Microeconomics: Policy and Applications (ECON2233), and Macroeconomics: Money and Finance (ECON1102). In 2022, he acted as lecturer and unit coordinator for Macroeconomics: Money and Finance (ECON1102) in an overseas articulation program.
Vuong's research focuses on health economics, applied econometrics, causal inference, impact evaluation using quasi-experimental methods, international development, and interdisciplinarity. His work explores themes such as health, disability, social attitudes towards persons with disabilities, Indigenous children, and early childhood interventions for vulnerable groups. This research contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals including good health and well-being, reduced inequalities, peace, justice, strong institutions, and partnerships. He received the International Research Training Program Fees Offset Scholarship and The Dean's Excellence in FABLE PhD Scholarship on 13 March 2018.
Notable publications include "The Luminos Project: Co-Designing a Short-Stay Suicide Support Model for Young People" (International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2025, co-authored with A. Hansen et al.), "Love Thy Neighbour? Social Attitudes Towards Persons With Disabilities" (World Development, 2024, with M. Palmer), "Development and interdisciplinarity: A citation analysis" (World Development, 2020, with S. Mitra and M. Palmer), and "Explaining Aid Project and Program Success: Findings from Asian Development Bank Interventions" (World Development, 2017, with S. Feeny). Vuong's scholarship informs policy through rigorous evidence-based evaluations of health and education interventions.
