Vivian A. Fonseca, MD, FRCP, is Professor of Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, holding the Tullis-Tulane Alumni Chair in Diabetes since 1998. He serves as Chief of the Section of Endocrinology since 2003, Assistant Dean for Clinical Research, Medical Director of the Tulane Clinical Trials Unit, and Director of the Research Professional Development Core. His academic background includes an M.B.B.S. from Armed Forces Medical College, Poona, India in 1974, M.D. from Bombay University in 1978, M.R.C.P. from the Royal College of Physicians, London in 1980, and F.R.C.P. in 2004. He holds specialist accreditation in Internal Medicine, Diabetes, and Endocrinology from the Royal College of Physicians (UK) in 1987, and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine (1993) and Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism (1995). Earlier in his career, he held positions including Senior Registrar and NHS Consultant in Medicine, Diabetes, and Endocrinology at Royal Free Hospital, London (1985-1992), Associate and Full Professor of Medicine at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (1992-1998), and various roles in India, the UK, and Saudi Arabia from 1975 to 1985.
Dr. Fonseca's research specializes in the prevention and treatment of diabetic complications, cardiovascular risk reduction in diabetes including the role of inflammation, and leveraging technology to enhance diabetes management in underprivileged populations. He has published nearly 500 peer-reviewed papers and reviews, edited the textbook Clinical Diabetes: Translating Research into Practice (Elsevier), and served as Editor-in-Chief of Diabetes Care (2007-2011) and Journal of Diabetes and its Complications (2012-present). A Past President for Science and Medicine of the American Diabetes Association (2012), he has contributed to ADA and AACE guidelines on diabetes management, chaired the ADA clinical practice committee, and participated in major trials such as ACCORD and TACT2. His honors include the ADA Banting Medal for Leadership and Service (2012), Seale-Harris Award from the Southern Medical Association (2012), election to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, multiple teaching awards, and recognition among top global experts in diabetes by Expertscape. He leads initiatives like REACHnet, LA CaTS Center, and the All of Us Program Southern Network as Louisiana PI.
