About Vilim

Dr. Vilim Filipović is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Agriculture and Food Sustainability at The University of Queensland, where he joined in 2022 to contribute to research and teaching in environmental soil science, vadose zone ecohydrology, and numerical modelling. He earned his PhD in Environmental Soil Science and Hydrology from the University of Zagreb, Croatia, and holds an Adjunct Associate Professor position there. Earlier in his career, he served as Head of Department at the University of Zagreb, led a Critical Zone Observatory, and held visiting scholar positions at CSIRO in Australia, SLU in Sweden, Penn State University, University of California, University of Florida in the USA, BOKU in Austria, ZALF in Germany, and INRAE in France. His academic journey began with studies in Agroecology majoring in Soil Science at the University of Zagreb.

Dr. Filipović's research focuses on environmental soil science, soil physical processes, vadose zone hydrology, contaminant and nutrient transport, preferential flow, and non-equilibrium processes in heterogeneous soils. He employs long-term field monitoring, experimental studies, and computational modelling to evaluate environmental pressures and develop management strategies for soil and water resources, supporting environmental sustainability, agricultural resilience, and mine rehabilitation. Current projects include Managing waste from mining with live covers and super-plants (2024-2027), Quantifying greenhouse gas emissions from crop residue decomposition (2024-2027), and Understanding crop development responses to high soil strength (2023-2027). He has received the Soil Science Society of America Early Career Award (2019), Visiting Fellowship at the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (2021), and CRC TiME Award for Outstanding Research Communication (2024). Key publications include 'Critical review of the models used to determine soil water content using TDR-measured apparent permittivity' (Advances in Agronomy, 2023), 'A review of time domain reflectometry (TDR) applications in porous media' (Advances in Agronomy, 2021), 'Decoding Soil Constraints in Queensland, Australia: Strategies for Precision Management to Enhance Crop Productivity' (2025), and 'Dynamic Modeling of Soil Water Dynamics and Nitrogen Species Transport with Multi-Crop Rotations Under Variable-Saturated Conditions' (2025). Dr. Filipović teaches courses such as Sustainable Soil Management and serves as Associate Editor for Soil Science Society of America Journal and Vadose Zone Journal, fostering international collaborations across Australia, Europe, and North America.
