Rate My Professor Vikki Neville

Dr Vikki Neville is a Research Fellow and Proleptic Lecturer at Bristol Veterinary School at the University of Bristol. She investigates animal emotion and welfare using a range of techniques including behavioural experiments and observations, computational modelling, and research synthesis. Dr Neville holds an MRes and BSc and serves as a Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council Discovery Fellow. Her work focuses on high-quality fundamental science studies to better understand animal emotion and welfare across companion and laboratory species including starlings, rabbits, and rats. She is dedicated to mentoring colleagues and students in the use of quantitative approaches to animal welfare issues.

Dr Neville has received the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare Early Career Animal Welfare Researcher of the Year Award in 2024 in recognition of her academic excellence, drive, and leadership in improving the welfare of laboratory animals. She has expressed gratitude to colleagues and mentors including Professor Mike Mendl, Dr Liz Paul, Professor Peter Dayan, and Professor Iain Gilchrist. Dr Neville will present the award lecture at the UFAW International Animal Welfare Conference. Her contributions advance the field of animal welfare science through novel approaches and a commitment to evidence-based practices in veterinary research.
