Dr. Vanassa Ratnasingam is Senior Lecturer in General Practice and Family Medicine at Clinical School Johor Bahru, Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Monash University Malaysia. She completed her MBBS at Kasturba Medical College Manipal, India, in 1994, and obtained a Masters of Medical Education with Distinction from University Malaya on 8 October 2025. Prior to academia, she served in various departments at Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Hospital Kota Bahru, and Hospital Sultanah Aminah Johor Bahru, and worked as a general practitioner at a clinic in Johor Bahru. She joined Monash University Malaysia as sessional staff in May 2008 and as Lecturer in General Practice and Family Medicine in March 2009, progressing to her current senior lecturer position.
Dr. Ratnasingam is involved in Year 4 MBBS teaching in General Practice and Family Medicine, serving as Monash Malaysia Clinical Academic Lead for Year 4 General Practice, and as a member of the Year 4 Committee, Year 4 MBBS Assessment Working Group, Year 4 MBBS Assessment Committee (co-chair), MPCC, and Medical Education Unit. Her research specializations include gut microbiome and polycystic ovary syndrome, probiotic effects beyond gastrointestinal diseases, human and formula milk impacts on infant gut health, probiotics in substance use disorders, and diabetes management, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being. Key publications comprise 'Unveiling the Connection between Gut Microbiome and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)' (2025), 'Bacillus causii: potential probiotic effects beyond gastrointestinal diseases' (2024), 'Exploring the potential of human milk and formula milk on infants’ gut and health' (2022, 76 Scopus citations), 'Feedback after OSCE: A comparison of face to face versus an enhanced written feedback' (2021), and 'Patients’ and Caregivers’ Attitudes Toward Deprescribing in Singapore' (2021). Awards include the 2025 PVC’s Award for Excellence in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, 2025 PVC’s Commendation for Excellence in Education – Programs that Enhance Learning, and participation in the Malaysian Diabetes and Research on Lifelong Lifestyle Intervention Group (MY DARLING) study (2011). She contributes to external services such as Board of Visitors to Psychiatry Unit at Hospital Sultanah Aminah Johor Bahru and committees for NGOs on HIV harm reduction, child abuse, women’s needs, and UNHCR community activities.
