Dr. Uday Tupakula is a Senior Lecturer and Honorary Associate Professor in the College of Engineering, Science and Environment (Computing and Information Technology) at the University of Newcastle. He obtained his PhD in Computing from Macquarie University in 2006, with a thesis focused on cybersecurity, particularly securing networks against distributed denial of service attacks. His academic background also includes a Master of Computing from the University of Western Sydney and a Bachelor of Engineering from Gulbarga University, India. Prior to joining the University of Newcastle in May 2017, he worked as a Research Fellow and Lecturer at Macquarie University's Department of Computing from 2005 to 2017. At Newcastle, he serves as Program Convener for the Master of Cyber Security and Graduate Certificate in Cyber Security programs, coordinates courses such as Security Attacks and Mitigation Strategies (COMP3500, COMP6500) and Security Standards and Practices in Industry (COMP3600, COMP6600), and co-supervises PhD theses, Master's theses, and projects.
Dr. Tupakula's research specializes in cybersecurity, covering malware and denial of service attacks, intrusion detection, mobile and sensor networks security, cloud computing security, virtualisation security, software-defined networks security, and trusted computing, with applications to healthcare security, cognitive radio networks, and smart grids. He has published 74 papers in top-tier journals and conferences, including 'A detailed investigation and analysis of using machine learning techniques for intrusion detection' (2018), 'Autoencoder-based feature learning for cyber security applications' (2017), 'Intrusion detection techniques in cloud environment: A survey' (2017), 'Security as a service model for cloud environment' (2014), 'A policy-based security architecture for software-defined networks' (2018), and 'VMGuard: A VMI-based security architecture for intrusion detection in cloud environment' (2018). His work stems from projects funded by the Defence Signals Directorate, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Australian Research Council, and European Union. He was General Co-Chair for the ACM ASIACCS conference in Sydney in 2009, serves as a program committee member for international conferences, reviews for top journals and ARC grants including Discovery Projects and Future Fellowships, and is a member of IEEE, BCS, AISA, and ANZ-SDN Forum.
