About Tun

Professor Dr. Tun Ngwe is the Professor and Head of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Dental Medicine, Yangon. He holds a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (B.D.S.) from Yangon, Master of Dental Science (M.D.Sc.) from Yangon, Doctor of Medical Science (Dr. Med.Sc.), and Diploma in Medical Education (Dip. Med. Ed.). His expertise lies in oral and maxillofacial surgery, with a focus on reconstructive procedures and surgical innovations essential for patient outcomes in dental oncology and trauma management.

Tun Ngwe has authored and co-authored several publications in the Journal of Dental Science-UDMY, contributing to advancements in surgical techniques. In 'Alveolar Ridge Preservation with Hydroxyapatite/beta-tricalcium phosphate-Collagen Composite in Maxillary Anterior Teeth' (co-authored with Ei Thinzar Kyaw and Win Naing), the study compared dimensional changes and healing in extraction sockets with and without HA/β-TCP-collagen plugs, finding significantly less ridge width reduction (5.83±1.12 mm vs. 3.67±1.16 mm) and better healing outcomes (p<0.005) in the grafted group over three months, without complications. 'Platysma Flap Reconstruction in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Tongue: Case Report' (with Ei Thinzar Kyaw and Win Naing) documents reconstructive surgery for tongue cancer defects. He presented 'Modified L-extension Deltopectoral Flap: Case Report' in the 2022 Journal of Dental Science-UDMY, detailing a modified flap for reliable, functional, and cosmetic tissue coverage. Another work, 'Application of Buccal Fat Pad for Lateral Palatal Defect in Cleft Palate' (with Swe Zin Ei and Win Naing), explores buccal fat pad flaps for palatal reconstruction. These publications emphasize his research on flaps and bone preservation critical for implantology and cancer surgery.

Professor Tun Ngwe actively contributes to professional education through lectures, including a Continuing Professional Development Programme at the University of Dental Medicine, Yangon, and as a speaker for the Myanmar Dental Association's CDE webinars on 'Management of Oral Cancer.' He has presented internationally on topics like the use of buccal fat pad flaps for immediate oral tissue reconstruction, enhancing clinical practices in Myanmar's dental field.
