About Treb

Treb Allen is the Michael G. Fisch 1983 Distinguished Professor of Economics at Dartmouth College, as well as the Distinguished Professor of Economics and Globalization, and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University in 2012 with distinction, M.Phil. in 2010, M.A. in 2009, and B.A. in Political Economy magna cum laude from Williams College in 2006. Allen's research focuses on international economics, development economics, urban economics, economic history, and economic geography. His academic career includes serving as Professor of Economics at Dartmouth College since 2023, following his role as Associate Professor of Economics and Distinguished Associate Professor of Economics and Globalization from 2016 to 2023. Prior appointments encompass Assistant Professor at Northwestern University from 2013 to 2016, Visiting Assistant Professor at Stanford University's Institute for Economic Policy Research from 2015 to 2016, and International Economics Section Fellow at Princeton University from 2012 to 2013.

Allen's publications have appeared in premier journals including Econometrica, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Political Economy, Review of Economic Studies, and Review of Economics and Statistics. Key works include 'Trade and the Topography of the Spatial Economy' with Costas Arkolakis (Quarterly Journal of Economics, 2014), 'Information Frictions in Trade' (Econometrica, 2014), 'Universal Gravity' with Costas Arkolakis and Yuta Takahashi (Journal of Political Economy, 2020), 'Volatility and the Gains from Trade' with David Atkin (Econometrica, 2022), and 'Economic Activity Across Space: A Supply and Demand Approach' with Costas Arkolakis (Journal of Economic Perspectives, 2023). He has received the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship (2018-2020), Kiel Institute Excellence Award in Global Economics (2017), WTO Essay Award for Young Economists (2012), multiple Best Co-Editor Prizes from the Journal of International Economics (2020, 2021, 2022), and American Economic Review Excellence in Refereeing Awards (2016, 2017, 2019). Currently, he is Editor of the Review of Economics and Statistics; previously, he was Co-editor of the Journal of International Economics (2018-), Associate Editor of Econometrica (2017-2023), and a Board Member for the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy (2017-2023).
