Dr Tracey Sempowicz is a Lecturer in Education in the School of Education and Tertiary Access at the University of the Sunshine Coast, where she serves as Program Coordinator for the Master of Teaching (Primary). She is recognised as a leader, researcher, and teacher in the area of Inclusive Education. Her academic background includes a PhD and a Master of Education (Leadership and Management) from Queensland University of Technology, a Bachelor of Education from Brisbane College of Advanced Education, and a Diploma of Teaching from the same institution. Prior to academia, she held Head of Department positions for 25 years across five Queensland secondary schools in curriculum areas including Business, Art, Music, Home Economics, Manual Arts, and Middle School. She lectured at Queensland University of Technology for 10 years, attaining accreditation as an Advance HE Senior Fellow (SFHEA).
Dr Sempowicz's research interests focus on inclusive education, inclusive practices supporting students from trauma backgrounds, impacts of attachment and trauma on school children, teaching for diversity, trauma-informed practices, teacher agency, and academic professional development through reflection. She co-leads the UniSC Social Justice, Equity and Education Policy Research group. Key publications include 'Mentoring pre-service teachers' reflective practices towards producing teaching outcomes' (2012, with P. Hudson), 'Analysing mentoring dialogues for developing a preservice teacher's classroom management practices' (2011, with P. Hudson), 'Identifying obstacles and opportunities for inclusion in the school curriculum for children adopted from overseas: Developmental and social constructionist perspectives' (2018, with J. Howard, M. Tambyah, and S. Carrington), 'Advancing the inclusion agenda in Australia: A multi-case study of the school experiences of children adopted from overseas' (2023, with S. Carrington), and a chapter in 'Introduction to Education: Knowledge, Practice, Engagement' (2021). She teaches Human Development and Learning, Professional Experience: Role of the Teacher, Individual Learner Needs, and Diversity and Inclusion, and mentors academics pursuing SFHEA accreditation.
