Tomasz J. Kozubowski is a distinguished Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he has served since 2000. His academic journey began with graduate studies in applied mathematics at the University of Warsaw, Poland, followed by an MS in Statistics from the University of Texas at El Paso and a PhD in Statistics and Applied Probability from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1998. As an accomplished researcher in mathematics, Kozubowski has made significant contributions to probability theory and statistical modeling. His primary research specializations include distribution theory, with a focus on the Laplace distribution and its generalizations, limit theory for random sums, heavy-tailed distributions, mathematical statistics, statistics of extremes, financial and insurance mathematics, computational statistics, and stochastic models for hydro-climatic phenomena.
Throughout his career, Kozubowski has authored or co-authored two influential books: "The Laplace Distribution and Generalizations: A Revisit with Applications to Communications, Economics, Engineering, and Finance" (Birkhäuser, 2001, with Samuel Kotz and Krzysztof Podgórski) and "Ill-Posed Problems in Probability and Stability of Random Sums" (Nova Science Publishers, 2006, with Lev Klebanov and Svetlozar Rachev). He has published extensively in prestigious journals, with recent works such as "A holistic stochastic model for precipitation events" in Scientific Reports (2025, with A. Weyant et al.), "Matrix variate generalized asymmetric Laplace distributions" in Theory of Probability and Mathematical Statistics (2023, with S. Mazur and K. Podgórski), "Slash distributions, generalized convolutions, and extremes" in Annals of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics (2023, with M. Arendarczyk and A.K. Panorska), and many others. His publications have garnered thousands of citations, reflecting their broad impact across disciplines including finance, engineering, and environmental science. Kozubowski's scholarly service includes membership on the editorial boards of several academic journals and peer review for over 100 journals, earning him the 2016 Sentinel of Science Reward from Publons. He has mentored numerous graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and undergraduates in mathematics and statistics.
