About Therese

Dr Therese Kvist is a Senior Lecturer in Paediatric Dentistry at the UWA Dental School, University of Western Australia. She earned her PhD from Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2016, with the thesis titled "A dental perspective on child maltreatment," and completed her specialist training in paediatric dentistry at the same institution in 2017. Previously affiliated with Karolinska Institutet, Dr Kvist has extensive clinical experience collaborating with child protection services, child welfare organizations, and family domestic violence support programs. She currently teaches units including Fundamentals of Clinical Dentistry 2 Part 2 (DENT4213) and Social Dental Practice (DENTM590), and delivers invited lectures at international conferences such as the EAPD 2026 Congress.

Dr Kvist's research specializations include child protection, child health welfare, forensic odontology, and paediatric dentistry. She pioneered dental perspectives on child maltreatment in early years. Her ongoing projects encompass studies on child physical abuse in Sweden, associations between adverse childhood experiences and oral health in the HUNT4 Survey, health assessments for children with suspected maltreatment, and interventions against violence towards young children, often in collaboration with Karolinska Institutet. She is an investigator on the ORCHID project funded by the Research Council of Norway (2024–2026). Key publications are "Artificial Intelligence in dentistry: an overview of systematic reviews and meta-analysis" (Evidence-Based Dentistry, 2025), "Associations between childhood adversity and adult oral health-related quality of life, the HUNT4 Survey" (BMC Public Health, 2025), "Associations of adverse childhood experiences with dental fear, and the mediating role of dental fear on caries experience: the Young-HUNT4 Survey" (BMC Oral Health, 2025), "Oral health among children participating in an extended home visiting programme—a case–control study" (European Archives of Paediatric Dentistry, 2025), and "Associations of adverse childhood experiences with caries and toothbrushing in adolescents.
