Ted Brimeyer serves as Department Chair and Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Georgia Southern University, where he has been a faculty member since 2005. He earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from Purdue University in 2005, with a dissertation titled 'An Examination of Management-Labor Relations and the Influence of Age on Worker Commitment to Union and Company in a Manufacturing Plant.' Prior to that, he received his M.S. in Sociology from Purdue University in 2002, focusing on class sentiments among college students, and a B.A. in Sociology from Loras College in 1999. Brimeyer advanced through the ranks at Georgia Southern, serving as Assistant Professor from 2005 to 2010, Associate Professor from 2010 to 2020, and full Professor since 2020. He also directed the Master of Arts in Social Science program from 2009 to 2016. His research specializations encompass labor and labor movements, social stratification, work and occupations, and college student attitudes and experiences. He teaches courses in work and organizations, research methods, social theory, and political economy.
Brimeyer's scholarly contributions include numerous refereed journal articles, such as 'Southern Assumptions: Normalizing Racialized Structures at a University in the Deep South' (2019, co-authored with D.W. DeVose, A. Dawson, A.M. Schueths, and J.Y. Freeman, Race, Ethnicity, and Education); 'Do Open Educational Resources Help Contingent Sociology Faculty Acquire Teaching Resources and Form Collegial Relationships?' (2018, co-authored with N. Palmer and A.M. Schueths, The American Sociologist); 'What Do Unions Do? Media Framing of the Two-Faces of Labor' (2016, co-authored with E.O. Silva and R.J. Bryne, Working USA); 'Who Benefits from College Honors Programs? An Empirical Analysis of Honors and Non-Honors Students’ Backgrounds and Academic Attitudes and Behaviors' (2014, co-authored with A.M. Schueths and W.L. Smith, Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council); and 'Longitudinal Modeling of Frame Changing and Media Salience: Coverage of Worker Displacement, 1980–2007' (2012, co-authored with G.L. Muschert and S. Lippman, International Journal of Communication). He received the Department of Sociology and Anthropology Mentor of the Year award in 2015. Brimeyer has contributed extensively to service, including roles on the University Senate (2016-2019), Institutional Review Board (2007-2011, 2013-2015), and as Co-Editor of the Labor Studies Division Newsletter for the Society for the Study of Social Problems (2009-2013).
