Dr Tanvi Newaz is a Senior Lecturer in Construction Management (Building) within the School of Architecture and Built Environment at the University of Newcastle, Australia. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Newcastle, where her thesis examined the psychological contract to measure safety outcomes on construction sites, a Master of Arts from the University of Westminster, UK, and a Bachelor of Business Administration from East West University, Bangladesh. Her academic career includes prior roles at BRAC University in Bangladesh as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and Assistant Professor in the Business School from 2011 to 2015. Since joining the University of Newcastle in 2015 as a Research Assistant, she advanced to Lecturer in 2019 and currently serves as Senior Lecturer.
Dr Newaz leads the Construction Health and Safety Research Team and directs the Centre for Construction Safety and Well-being (CCSW), established through an industry partnership with Hansen Yuncken. Her research specializations encompass workplace health and safety, safety climate and behaviour in construction, the psychological contract of safety, Industry 4.0 applications, mental health, resilience development, and sustainability in construction. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, including "Developing a safety climate factor model in construction research and practice: A systematic review identifying future directions for research" (Engineering, Construction and Architectural Management, 2018), "The psychological contract: A missing link between safety climate and safety behaviour on construction sites" (Safety Science, 2019), "A review and assessment of technologies for addressing the risk of falling from height on construction sites" (Safety Science, 2022), and "A critical review of the feasibility of emerging technologies for improving safety behavior on construction sites" (Journal of Safety Research, 2024). Dr Newaz has secured over $950,000 in research funding as lead or chief investigator on grants from industry partners like Hansen Yuncken ($620,000, 2023-2026) and the NSW Department of Customer Service. Awards include the AUBEA 2019 Best Paper and University of Newcastle scholarships. She supervises PhD students in areas such as AI for safety and Construction 4.0, contributing significantly to advancing construction safety practices and education.
