Dr Tanmay Bagade serves as Senior Lecturer in Medical Education and Global Health within the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Newcastle. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Gender and Health from the University of Newcastle, Master of Surgery in Obstetrics and Gynecology from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences in India, and Masters degrees in Public Health and Health Management from the University of New South Wales. With over two decades of experience as an Obstetrician, he has practiced in India, Somalia, and Papua New Guinea, collaborating with international bodies such as the World Health Organization, United Nations Population Fund, and Women and Health Alliance International. Notably, in Papua New Guinea, he founded the East New Britain provincial Maternal Death Review and Family and Sexual Violence Action Committees, improving clinical governance, protocols, and referral pathways for maternal and child health.
Currently, Dr Bagade is Deputy Program Convener for the Graduate Certificate in Public Health, Master of Public Health, and related programs, Chair of the Joint Medical Programme Admissions Committee, and Lead of the Global Health pathway stream in the Joint Medical Programme. He coordinates key courses including Global Health (PUBH6304), Global Health Systems and Policy (PUBH6305), and Chronic Diseases and Injury Control (PUBH6301). His research specializations encompass reproductive, maternal, and child health, gender equality, and women's rights, particularly maternal health, infertility, and justice health. Key publications include "Does gender equality and availability of contraception influence maternal and child mortality? A systematic review" (BMJ Sexual & Reproductive Health, 2020), "The human right to safely give birth: data from 193 countries show that gender equality does affect maternal mortality" (BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth, 2022), "A Women’s Rights-Based Approach to Reducing Child Mortality: Data from 193 Countries Show that Gender Equality does Affect Under-five Child Mortality" (Maternal and Child Health Journal, 2022), and "The social determinants of mental health disorders among women with infertility: a systematic review" (BMC Women's Health, 2023). He has received the University of Newcastle's Work Integrated Learning Staff Member of the Year Award (2021), Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (2021), and Best HDR Confirmation Award (2018). Dr Bagade holds editorial roles as Associate Editor for BMC Public Health and PLOS One Global Health, and serves on committees including the ACHIEVE Scholarship of Practice Communications Committee.
