Takako Shimamoto is Vice President, Professor with a medical doctorate in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Comprehensive Social Studies, University Librarian, and Director of the Comprehensive Research Institute at Nara University. She earned her medical education from the Faculty of Medicine at Keio University between 1981 and 1987, followed by the Graduate School of Medicine at Osaka University from 1987 to 1991. Her career commenced as a part-time physician and assistant in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Nara Medical University from 1991 to 1994. From 1995 to 2009, she advanced through administrative roles in the Health and Welfare Department of Osaka Prefecture, including Chief Examiner, Section Chief, and Advisor.
At Nara University since 2009, Professor Shimamoto's academic interests encompass public health, obstetrics and gynecology, women's medicine, and gender equality. Her research explores clinical practices and medical health administration for women and children, perinatal care, maternal and child health, measures against declining birthrates, lifelong health and healthcare, life sciences in relation to human lifestyles, sex-differentiated medicine, gender theory, and sociological foundations for promoting gender equality and women's active participation in society. Notable publications include the books 'A Humanism of Living' (Nakanishiya Publishing), 'Current Status and Prospects of Women-Only Clinics' (Seiron Jihōsha), and '50 Keywords to Learn Health Science: Foundation for Living in the 100-Year Life Era.' She has contributed articles to the Memoirs of Nara University on topics such as gender perspectives on menopausal disorders, interpersonal relations and subjective symptoms, and health perceptions among university students. Professor Shimamoto has led Japan Society for the Promotion of Science grants, including studies on sociology-women's medicine collaboration for active healthy aging indicators and gender-based menopausal complaint assessments. She holds positions on the Nara Prefecture Public Safety Commission since 2018, Nara Prefecture Medical Council since 2020, and Nara Prefecture Gender Equality Promotion Council, while teaching 'Gender Physiology' at Nara Women’s University and providing counseling on women's health from puberty to menopause.
