A master at fostering understanding.
Tahnee Andrew, PhD, MSN, RN, CNE, NPD-BC, serves as Assistant Professor of Instruction in the School of Nursing within Ohio University’s College of Health Sciences and Professions. She also holds the position of Associate Director of the School of Nursing at Ohio University Chillicothe. A two-time graduate of Ohio University, Dr. Andrew received her Doctor of Philosophy in Curriculum and Instruction in 2020 and her Master of Science in Nursing. Her professional qualifications include registration as a nurse (RN), certification as a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE), and board certification in Nursing Professional Development (NPD-BC). Dr. Andrew began her nursing career in West Virginia and has worked as a nurse educator in the southern Ohio region.
Dr. Andrew’s doctoral dissertation, titled “What Nursing Students Believe Impacts Academic Success in the First Year of a Baccalaureate Nursing Program,” examined undergraduate nursing students’ perceptions of factors influencing their academic performance during the initial year of a baccalaureate program. Employing Jeffreys’ Nursing Universal Retention and Success (NURS) model as a framework, the research revealed that students attribute academic success to a range of personal responsibilities, including effective study skills, time management, appropriate prioritization, and positive attitudes. Students also identified the necessity of accessible support systems to manage stress and anxiety effectively. The findings underscore students’ accountability for addressing these elements to foster their persistence and progression through rigorous nursing education. This work offers nurse educators valuable perspectives for designing targeted interventions and support mechanisms to minimize attrition rates while preserving the elevated academic standards required to produce competent and safe practicing nurses. In recognition of her potential in academic leadership, Dr. Andrew participated in Ohio University’s Emerging Leader Academy, a year-long peer-led faculty development initiative launched in 2022 for early- and mid-career faculty. She is affiliated with the nursing graduate faculty and contributes to programs such as the Bobcat Pathways to Nursing Initiative.
