About Susanne

Susanne Bruyère, Ph.D., CRC, is Professor of Disability Studies in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University, where she also serves as Academic Director of the K. Lisa Yang and Hock E. Tan Institute on Employment and Disability, a position she has held since 1990. She earned her doctoral degree in Rehabilitation Counseling Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Earlier in her career, Bruyère served on the faculty at Seattle University and began her professional journey working as a psychiatric attendant. As principal investigator and project director, she has led dozens of federally sponsored research, dissemination, and technical assistance efforts on employment and disability policy and workplace practices, securing over $60 million in grant funding from U.S. Departments of Labor, Education, and Health and Human Services. Bruyère is a past president of the American Psychological Association's Division of Rehabilitation Psychology (Division 22), the American Rehabilitation Counseling Association, and the National Council on Rehabilitation Education. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Divisions 14 and 22) and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and has held leadership roles including past chair of GLADNET and current board member of CARF.

Her research focuses on facilitators to full inclusion of individuals with disabilities in the workforce, including neurodiversity-inclusive policies and practices, employer accommodations, disability disclosure, and global regulatory frameworks. Bruyère is author or co-author of five books, including Disability and Employer Practices: Research Across the Disciplines (Cornell University Press, 2016), Neurodiversity in the Workplace: Interests, Issues, and Opportunities (Routledge, 2023), Employment and Disability (Labor and Employment Relations Association, 2019), and Employment and Work (SAGE Publications, 2012). She has authored over 180 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, with top-cited publications such as "Perspectives on Disability Disclosure: The Importance of Employer Practices and Workplace Climate" (Employee Responsibilities and Rights Journal, 2014; 433 citations), "Accommodating Employees with and without Disabilities" (Human Resource Management, 2014; 353 citations), and "The Advantages and Challenges of Neurodiversity Employment in Organizations" (Journal of Management & Organization, 2019; 316 citations). Notable awards include the 2026 ARRPE Distinguished Career in Rehabilitation Award, SIOP Fellow, 2006 James F. Garrett Award, and Karl F. Heiser Award for Advocacy from the American Psychological Association. Through her work, Bruyère has advanced interdisciplinary research bridging policy, practice, and organizational strategies for disability employment worldwide.
