Susan A. Baker, PhD, RN, is the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs in the College of Nursing at Florida State University. She brings more than thirty years of experience in nursing academia and clinical practice, with a primary focus on the care of cancer patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Baker earned her PhD and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from the University of South Florida, and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. She holds an active license as a Registered Nurse in Florida. In her current administrative role, she oversees faculty affairs, including recruitment, development, and support within the College of Nursing, and serves as a key contact for various faculty hiring initiatives and undergraduate programs such as NUR 1010 in the Engage 100 experiences.
Baker's research interests center on cancer and cancer screening behaviors among African Americans, as well as cancer literacy in underrepresented populations. Her doctoral dissertation, titled 'Prostate Cancer Screening Behaviors of African American Men: An Instrument Development Study,' earned her the Outstanding Dissertation Award in 2008 from the University of South Florida. She has been recognized for her leadership contributions, receiving the Nurse Leader award at the Florida State University College of Nursing's second annual Nole Nurse Shining Stars Gala in 2024. Additionally, Baker represents the College of Nursing on the university's Committee for Assessment of Student Learning (CASL). Her extensive background equips her to advance nursing education and faculty excellence at one of the nation's elite research universities.
