Supriya Baily is a Professor in the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University, serving as Co-Director of the Center for International Education. She teaches international and comparative education and qualitative research methods. Affiliated with the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution and the Women and Gender Studies Program, her academic journey includes a Ph.D. in International Education from George Mason University in 2008, with a dissertation titled 'Sharing power: how nonformal education for women shapes the perceptions and attitudes of community leaders — A case study in India.' She also holds an M.A. in International Development Studies from The George Washington University in 1997, focusing on international education, and a B.A. in Social Work from the University of Delhi and University of Nevada, Reno in 1995, with a minor in Women's Studies.
Prior to academia, Dr. Baily worked for over a decade with development and social justice organizations, including as a community organizer in India from her teenage years, founder and president of CRISIS—a youth mentoring movement—and consultant for The Teachers Foundation in India. Her research examines how structures of power intersect with education to create unequal systems, particularly the marginalization of girls and women in policy and practice, and the role of teacher education in addressing inequity. Key publications include Bangalore Girls: Witnessing the Rise of Nationalism in a Progressive City (2024, Rowman & Littlefield); Experiments in Agency: A Global Partnership to Transform Teacher Research (2017, Sense Publishers); Educating Adolescent Girls Around the Globe: Challenges and Opportunities (2015, Routledge); Internationalizing Teacher Education in the United States (2012, Rowman & Littlefield); and Interrogating and Innovating CIE Research: Decolonizing Practices for Inclusive, Safe Spaces (2020, Brill). She has received the Outstanding Co-Author Contribution Award (2017) and Outstanding Author Contribution Award (2013) from the Literati Network Awards for Excellence, a nomination for the 2019 George Mason University Teaching Excellence Award, and shortlisting as finalist for the Jackie Kirk Book Award (CIES, 2015). Dr. Baily has served as Treasurer of the Comparative and International Education Society, Co-Chair of its Gender and Education Committee, and Program Chair for the Peace Education Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association, and has presented at numerous national and international conferences.
