Sunny Boy A. Mahboob-Brumby serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney. His academic background includes a BA and MA from the University of Karachi, an MA from Indiana University, an MEd from the University of Sydney, and a PhD from Indiana University Bloomington awarded in 2003. The focus of his doctoral dissertation was the status of nonnative English speakers as ESL teachers.
Mahboob-Brumby's research specializations lie in applied linguistics, decolonising language education and research, subaltern linguistics, CREDIBLE research frameworks (Culturally Responsive, Equitable, Decolonised, Inclusive, Bottom-up, Transformative, Ethical), positive discourse analysis, and studies on native and non-native English-speaking teachers. He has produced an extensive body of work, including the co-authored book Subaltern Linguistics: A Toolkit for Alternative Education and Practice (Taylor & Francis, 2025, with A. Mallet and L.C. Koay), featuring chapters such as 'CREDIBLE projects for economic development', 'CREDIBLE projects for education', 'CREDIBLE projects for health and wellbeing', 'CREDIBLE projects for the environment', 'How do we do CREDIBLE? – The Ribbit-Ribbit Pond', and 'Introduction'; Writings on Subaltern Practice (Springer Nature, 2023); 'Research on "native" and "non-native" English-speaking teachers: Past developments, current status, and future directions' (Language Teaching, 2024, with A.F. Selvi and B. Yazan); 'On Linguicism, Epistemic Injustice, and Research in Language-in-Education: A Commentary' (Language Learning, 2023); 'Writing Development of the Case Analysis Genre: The Importance of Feedback and Negotiated Construction in the Teaching Learning Cycle' (Crossing Boundaries in Researching, Understanding, and Improving Language Education, 2023, with M.P. Gomez-Laich and S. Pessoa); and 'English in Pakistan: Past, present and future' (English in East and South Asia, 2021). Mahboob-Brumby joined the University of Sydney in 2004 and has received the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Teaching Award. He contributes to editorial roles and established the Free Linguistics Conference in 2007 with Naomi K. Knight. His scholarship promotes equitable practices, challenging traditional paradigms and fostering impact in global language studies.
