Professor Sunit K. Singh is a Professor of Molecular Immunology and Virology at the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi. He earned his PhD in Molecular Infection Biology from the University of Würzburg, Germany, in 2005, followed by postdoctoral training at Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, and University of California Davis Medical Center, Sacramento. From 2006 to 2014, he served as a Scientist at CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, leading a research group in neurovirology and inflammation biology. Upon joining BHU in 2014, he headed the Molecular Biology Unit, Institute of Medical Sciences, until 2023 and acted as Professor Incharge of the Center for Experimental Medicine and Surgery for approximately five years. Currently on deputation, he directs the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Centre for Biomedical Research and the Delhi School of Public Health at the University of Delhi.
Singh's research focuses on molecular virology, particularly the pathogenesis of vector-borne viruses such as Kyasanur Forest disease virus, Chandipura virus, SARS-CoV-2, Dengue virus, Zika virus, Japanese Encephalitis virus, Chikungunya virus, and HIV-1. His studies investigate viral modulation of host microRNAs, disruption of blood-tissue barriers, and immune response alterations, with findings published in journals including The Lancet Infectious Diseases, Tissue Barriers, Scientific Reports, and Journal of Neuroinflammation. He has authored and edited books such as Neuroviral Infections (Volumes I and II, CRC Press), Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers (CRC Press), Human Respiratory Viral Infections (CRC Press), Neglected Tropical Diseases - South Asia (Springer), Defense Against Biological Attacks (Volumes I and II, Springer), Viral Infections and Global Change (Wiley-Blackwell), and Human Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases (Volumes I and II, Wiley-Blackwell). Recognized for his impact, Singh holds fellowships including FAMS (2023), FRSB (2023), FNASc (2022), and FIAN (2021), along with ICMR awards for virology and immunology, Prof. Sohail Ahmad Award (2022), and others. He contributes to editorial boards of international journals.
