Dr Sumitra Pathmanathan is a Senior Lecturer at the Clinical School Johor Bahru, Monash University Malaysia, within the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences, specializing in anaesthesiology. Her research interests center on anaesthesia, particularly regional and ambulatory anaesthesia. She commenced her medical education by graduating with an M.B.Ch.B. from the University of Tanta, Egypt, in 1988. The next year, she completed her housemanship training at General Hospital Kuala Lumpur. Gaining early clinical experience, she then worked for five years at Hospital Sultanah Aminah, Johor Bahru, and Hospital Besar Kota Bahru, honing her skills in patient care and medical procedures.
Dr Pathmanathan advanced her specialization by earning an M.Med in Anaesthesiology from the University of Malaya in 1999, during which she served briefly as a lecturer at the university. She subsequently rejoined Hospital Sultanah Aminah as a clinical specialist. Since 2003, she has conducted freelance anaesthesiology and held sessional positions at Hospital Sultanah Aminah and Hospital Sultan Ismail, Johor Bahru. Her association with Monash University Malaysia started in 2008 as a sessional lecturer, progressing to a fractional appointment in February 2010, and culminating in her current Senior Lecturer role. This career path reflects her dual commitment to clinical anaesthesiology practice and academic contributions in the field of medicine at Monash University.
