Dr. Suejung Han is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Illinois State University, affiliated with the Clinical-Counseling Psychology area. She earned her PhD in Counseling Psychology from Purdue University in 2009, with her dissertation titled "Emotion regulation, coping, and attachment in bingeing behaviors." She also completed a Clinical Psychology Residency at Purdue University. Prior to joining Illinois State University as an Assistant Professor in August 2014, Dr. Han served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Her research specializations include attachment theory and emotion regulation in relation to disordered eating, binge eating behaviors, perfectionistic concerns, and psychological distress among college students. She investigates personality factors such as the Big Five traits as predictors of procrastination, acculturative stress and parental/professor attachment among international students like Korean American adolescents, perceived discrimination and ethnic identity development, and factors influencing openness to diversity and social justice action.
Dr. Han has published key articles in prominent journals including The Counseling Psychologist, The Journal of Psychology, Self and Identity, and Journal of College Counseling. Select publications are "Attachment, Emotion Regulation Difficulties, and Disordered Eating Among College Women and Men" (2017, with Jeffrey H. Kahn), "Big Five Personality Factors and Facets as Predictors of Procrastination" (2017, with M. Carole Pistole), "Perfectionistic Concerns, Emotion Regulation, and Psychological Distress: A Moderated Mediation Model" (2022, with Jennifer L. Woodrum and Jeffrey H. Kahn), "Perceived Discrimination, Ethnic Identity, and Well-Being among International Students" (2018), "Acculturative Stress, Attachment to Parents and Teachers, and English Proficiency among Korean American Adolescents" (2017), and "College Student Binge Eating: Insecure Attachment and Emotion Regulation" (2014). She has earned the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Early Career Scholar Award (2016-17), Excellence Award for Early Career Scholars (2017), and University College Impact Award (2017) at Illinois State University. Dr. Han holds leadership roles as President of AsiaConnect and affiliated faculty in Women's and Gender Studies, while mentoring numerous student research projects on biculturalism, self-objectification, marianismo, and bystander intervention in microaggressions. Her studies address faculty alliances for international student adjustment and media stereotypes' impact on students.
