Dr. Subhas Chandra Mukhopadhyay (M’97, SM’02, F’11) is a Professor of Mechanical/Electronic Engineering in the School of Engineering at Macquarie University, NSW 2109, Australia. He serves as Discipline Leader of the Mechatronics Engineering Programme and Director of International Engagement for the School of Engineering. He earned a B.E.E. (gold medallist), M.E.E., and Ph.D. from institutions in India, and a Doctor of Engineering from Japan. With more than 30 years of teaching, industrial, and research experience, he previously held the position of Professor of Sensing Technology at Massey University, New Zealand, where he supervised over 40 postgraduate students and more than 100 Honours students. His research focuses on sensors and sensing technology, instrumentation, wireless sensor networks, Internet of Things, mechatronics and robotics, and drones.
Mukhopadhyay has authored or co-authored over 450 papers in international journals, conferences, and book chapters, 10 books, and holds 14 patents. He has edited fifty books, eighteen conference proceedings, and forty special issues of international journals as guest editor. Recent edited volumes include Innovative Technologies in Intelligent Systems and Industrial Applications: CITISIA 2024 - volume 1 (2026, Springer) and volume 2 (2026, Springer). He has organized over 20 international conferences as General Chair or Technical Programme Chair, including the IEEE Sensors Conference 2009 in Christchurch, New Zealand, and 2021 in Sydney as General Co-chair. He has delivered 450 seminars, keynotes, invited talks, tutorials, and special lectures worldwide. A Fellow of IEEE (USA), IET (UK), and IETE (India), he received Best Performing Topical Editor awards for IEEE Sensors journal in 2016, 2017, and 2018, and served as Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Sensors Council from 2017 to 2022. His editorial roles include Topical Editor of IEEE Sensors, Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement and IEEE Reviews in Biomedical Engineering, Editor-in-Chief of S2IS journal, and Series Editor for Smart Sensing, Measurement and Instrumentation (Springer). He founded and chairs the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society New South Wales Chapter and the IEEE Sensors Council New South Wales Chapter.
