Su Shin is an associate professor in the Department of Family and Consumer Studies at the University of Utah, where she serves as director of Financial Planning. She joined the university in July 2019 and was promoted to associate professor on July 1, 2023. Shin holds a BA in Consumer and Child Studies from Seoul National University, earned in 2009. Her academic interests encompass household investment, health economics, aging, genetics, and sustainability. She examines the interplay of genetic risks, early life experiences, natural hazards, extreme heat, and environmental factors on cognitive and mental health, financial decision-making, economic hardship, and preventive behaviors, with a particular emphasis on older adults and vulnerable populations.
With over 40 peer-reviewed publications and more than 500 citations, Shin's key works include 'Extreme Heat, Functional Disability, and Social Isolation: Risk Disparity Among Older Adults' (2024), 'Performance Under Fire: Older Adult Cognitive Risks and Protections Under Heat Strain' (2024), 'The effect of natural disasters on household economic hardship during a pandemic' (2022), 'Understanding the correlation between Alzheimer’s Disease polygenic risk, wealth, and the composition of wealth holdings' (2020), 'Health benefits of local government sustainability efforts: A social cognitive perspective' (2021), and 'Early Life Experiences Moderate the Relationship Between Genetic Risk of Autism and Current and Lifetime Mental Health' (2021). She teaches courses such as FCS 3500 Financial Skills for Life, FCS 5530 Family Income Tax Planning, and FCS 6902. As advisor to the University of Utah Financial Planning Association Student Council, her team won the Financial Planning Challenge Cup in 2024. Shin received the EHE Scholarship for Excellence in Financial Planning Education Fund in 2014.
