Steven L. Neuberg is a Foundation Professor in the Department of Psychology at Arizona State University (ASU), serving as Chair from 2017 to 2023. He earned an A.B. in Psychology, magna cum laude, from Cornell University (1983), an M.A. in Psychology from Carnegie Mellon University (1984), and a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Carnegie Mellon University (1987). After a NATO Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Waterloo (1987-1988), he joined ASU as Assistant Professor (1988-1994), advancing to Associate Professor (1994-1999), Professor (1999-), and Foundation Professor (2010-).
Neuberg directs the Evolution, Ecology, and Social Behavior Lab, where he integrates social-cognitive and evolutionary approaches to study stereotypes, prejudices, discrimination, stigma, fundamental social motives, person perception, social exclusion, ecology-driven cultural variation, and religion in intergroup conflict. His prolific scholarship includes co-authoring the textbook Social Psychology: Goals in Interaction (7th edition, 2020, with D. T. Kenrick and R. B. Cialdini) and influential articles such as “The behavioral ecology of cultural psychological variation” (Psychological Review, 2019; Daniel M. Wegner Theoretical Innovation Prize) and “Ecology-driven stereotypes override race stereotypes” (PNAS, 2017; Honorable Mention, Gordon Allport Prize).
Recognized with election as Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2020), Society of Experimental Social Psychology (2009), Association for Psychological Science (2006), and others, Neuberg also received the Gordon Allport Intergroup Relations Prize (2013) and Arizona State University's Outstanding Doctoral Mentor Award (2012). He delivered the plenary address on evolutionary logics of stereotyping at the 2023 Human Behavior and Evolution Society conference and leads ASU's Psych for Life® initiative to translate psychological science for practical application.
