Professor Steven Walczak is a tenured professor in the School of Information within the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Florida. He earned his Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Florida, M.S. in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University, and B.S. in Mathematics from Pennsylvania State University. Walczak teaches courses in the health informatics and cybersecurity concentrations. His research specializations include applied artificial intelligence systems such as artificial neural networks, expert and knowledge-based systems, cognitive modeling, machine learning, and intelligent software agents. Additional academic interests encompass healthcare information systems, knowledge management, organizational learning, and electronic commerce with a focus on online auctions and virtual presence.
Recent projects involve using data science to identify note progression patterns in music for studying musical borrowing and text analytics to categorize tweets from disaster zones. Walczak was awarded Reviewer of the Year 2009 by the Journal of Theoretical and Applied Electronic Commerce Research and named an inaugural Highly Ranked Scholar by ScholarGPS, ranking #26 lifetime and #6 over the prior five years in artificial neural networks, among the top 0.05% of scholars worldwide. Notable publications include "Artificial neural networks" (2019), "Organizational knowledge management structure" (2005), "An empirical analysis of data requirements for financial forecasting with neural networks" (2001), "The relationship between website quality, trust and price premiums at online auctions" (2010), "Prediction of perioperative transfusions using an artificial neural network" (2020), and "A neural network analysis of the effect of high and low frailty index indicators on predicting elective surgery discharge destinations" (2023). He has held editorial roles including Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Organizational and End-User Computing (2016-2018) and The Learning Organization (2005-2007), and serves on multiple journal editorial boards. His contributions have significantly influenced fields like artificial intelligence, decision support systems, and healthcare informatics through prolific publications and high citation impact.
