Dr. Steve Smalt is the Director of the School of Accountancy and Associate Professor of Accounting & Information Systems in the Michael J. Coles College of Business at Kennesaw State University. He holds a Ph.D. in Accounting from the Union Institute and University, a Master of Accounting from the University of Florida, and a B.B.A. in Accounting from Columbus State University. Smalt joined Kennesaw State University in 1983, accumulating over 30 years of experience teaching accounting, auditing, international accounting, and financial information systems. Before KSU, he served in a faculty role at Columbus State University and a staff position at the University of Florida. A Certified Public Accountant, Smalt has professional experience in business management and management consulting for major clients such as Coca-Cola, Kroger, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Georgia Power. He was a former board member of STI Knowledge, Inc., an IT services company featured in Inc. Magazine’s 500 fastest-growing companies. Smalt has traveled worldwide to teach accounting fundamentals to professionals, led Continuing Professional Education programs for the Georgia Society of CPAs, and delivered seminars in European cities on U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, International Financial Reporting Standards, and SEC financial reporting standards in collaboration with the London-based Institute for International Research.
In December 2017, Smalt was appointed interim Director of the School of Accountancy following Dr. Richard Clune’s departure, and he assumed the full-time directorship effective April 13, 2018, after a nationwide search—the first full-time director since Dr. Kathryn Epps’s passing in 2017. His research specializations encompass blockchain technology, international accounting standards, and alternative accounting and business education practices. Notable publications include “The Impact of an Accounting Simulation on Performance and Perception in Accounting Courses” (2013, co-authored with Gary L. Selden, Journal of Economics and Economic Education Research), “How Nonfinancial Performance Measures Are Used” (1998, co-authored with B.P. Stivers, Nancy Green Hall, and others, Management Accounting), “Accounting for Internally Generated Intangible Assets” (2016, co-authored with J. Marshall McComb II, International Journal of Accounting and Taxation), and “An Examination of Accounting for Repurchase Agreements” (2015, co-authored with J. McComb II, Journal of Finance and Accountancy). Smalt has earned the Outstanding Faculty Cohort 38 award, Graduate Faculty Honor at Graduation, and Distinguished Graduate Teaching Award.
