Professor Steve Schneider holds a PhD from the University of Oxford, where he also completed postdoctoral positions. He joined the Department of Computer Science at Royal Holloway, University of London in 1994, advancing to professor by 2002. In September 2004, he moved to the University of Surrey's Department of Computer Science, serving as Head of Department from 2004 to 2010. He is currently Director of the Computer Science Research Centre, which includes the Surrey Centre for Cyber Security—recognized as a GCHQ Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research in 2015—and the Nature Inspired Computing and Engineering Research Group. From 2015 to 2019, he was Associate Dean for Research and Innovation in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. Schneider is a Fellow of the British Computer Society (FBCS) and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET).
His research focuses on secure electronic voting, distributed ledger technologies, rail and automotive security, security and privacy, and formal modeling and verification. Schneider's contributions to secure electronic voting have led to the development of a verifiable voting system implemented for the November 2014 State election in Victoria, Australia. Key publications include "The B-Method: an Introduction" (2001), "Privacy-Enhancing Decentralised Reputation Systems: A Future Of Work Perspective" with Felipe Merlano et al. (2025), "Preserving Privacy of Vulnerable Users across Heterogeneous Sensitive Sensor Data Streams using Smart Contracts" with Nidhi Desai et al. (2023), "Augmenting an Internet Voting System with Selene Verifiability using Permissioned Distributed Ledger" with Muntadher Sallal et al. (2020), and "A decision procedure for the existence of a rank function" with J. Heather (2005). He has held prominent roles in academic conferences, including General Chair for ESORICS 2020, Programme Chair for ESORICS 2019, General Chair for ACNS 2016, and General Chair for Vote-ID 2013. Additionally, he has edited proceedings for Vote-ID 2013.
