Dr. Stephen Monterosso is a Senior Lecturer and Discipline Lead for Business Law at Curtin Law School in the Faculty of Business and Law at Curtin University, Perth, Western Australia. He completed his PhD at Curtin University in 2015, with the thesis titled 'The Use of a Rights-Based Approach to Address Juvenile Violence in Australian Indigenous Communities.' He also holds a Master of Criminal Justice from the University of Western Australia. Earlier in his career, he served as a Lecturer in the School of Business Law and Taxation at Curtin University.
Monterosso's academic interests lie at the intersection of business law and criminal justice, with research focusing on youth crime prevention, witness protection programs, outlaw motorcycle gangs, restorative justice, and punitive criminal policies. His key publications include 'Risk and protective factors of youth crime: An umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses' (2024), 'Protective factors, risk factors, and intervention strategies in the prevention and reduction of crime among adolescents and young adults aged 12–24 years: A scoping review protocol' (2024), 'Shortcomings in the Operation and Coordination of Witness Protection in Australia. Where to from Here?' published in International Criminology (2022), 'From bikers to savvy criminals. Outlaw motorcycle gangs in Australia: implications for legislators and law enforcement' (2018), and 'Punitive criminal justice and policy in contemporary society' (2009). He co-authored 'A Therapeutic Approach to Workers Compensation' with Robert Guthrie. His research outputs have received over 65 citations. In teaching, he leads the Business Law discipline and instructs courses like Introduction to Safety & Environmental Health Law.
Monterosso contributes to public discourse through presentations, such as at the 'Positive Pathways for Indigenous At-Risk Youth' event in 2023, and media interviews on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. His scholarship bridges practical business law education with impactful criminal justice research.
