Stephanie Fleckenstein, AuD, CCC-A, is Clinical Associate Professor and Director of Clinical Programs in Audiology in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Iowa. She received her Bachelor of Science in Speech and Hearing Science and Master of Arts in Audiology from the University of Iowa in 1994 and 1996, respectively, followed by a Doctor of Audiology from A.T. Still University in 2009. Fleckenstein's professional journey at the University of Iowa began in 1999 as Audiologist I in the Department of Otolaryngology at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, advancing to Senior Audiologist from 2002 to 2003. She joined the faculty as Clinical Assistant Professor in Communication Sciences and Disorders in 2003, promoted to Clinical Associate Professor in 2021. Earlier, she served as Clinical Audiologist at Town Square ENT and Hearing Aid Services from 1997 to 1999.
Fleckenstein maintains active licensures in Iowa for audiology and hearing aid dealing since 1998 and holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology from ASHA since 1997. A Fellow of the American Academy of Audiology since 2015, she has been honored with the 2023 Honors of the National Chapter of the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association for her mentorship contributions, University of Iowa First Year Champion awards in 2022 and 2019, and the 2013 Excellence and Innovation Award from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She has obtained several instructional equipment grants for audiology tools between 2019 and 2022. Her scholarly work includes co-authoring "Barriers to Equity in Pediatric Hearing Health Care: A Review of the Evidence" in ASHA Sig 9 Perspectives (2022) and multiple contributions to the Iowa Speech-Language-Hearing Association's ISHA Connection newsletter. As Vice President for Audiology of the Iowa Speech-Language-Hearing Association since 2019, chair of various departmental committees including AuD Admissions since 2004 and Audiology Clinic Planning since 2021, and coordinator of the UI SAFE healthy hearing program established in 2010, Fleckenstein has significantly influenced audiology education, clinical training, hearing conservation, and student mentorship at the University of Iowa and beyond. She regularly guest lectures on topics such as hearing loss prevention, culturally responsive practices in audiology, and professional issues, and supervises AuD capstone projects.
