Steffen Hagemann is a Professor for Economic Geology in the School of Earth Sciences at the University of Western Australia, where he serves as Director of the Centre for Exploration Targeting. He earned a BSc from Frankfurt, an MSc from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a PhD from the University of Western Australia, and a Dr rer. nat. Habil from the Technical University Munich. With 33 years of experience in economic geology, Hagemann specializes in structural geology, hydrothermal alteration, and fluid chemistry of gold, iron, and copper deposits. His research integrates detailed field observations with high-tech geochemical methods to elucidate the metallogeny, paleo magmatic and hydrothermal evolution of mineral systems, and the four-dimensional controls on orebodies. Current projects encompass Au-Ag epithermal-porphyry deposits in the Philippines, nickel at Flying Fox, iron ore in the Hamersley Province, and gold deposits such as New Celebration, Golden Mile, and Crixás in Brazil, with future work planned on jaspilite-Fe deposits in Carajás, Brazil.
Prior to his current roles, Hagemann was an Assistant Professor at the Technical University Munich. At UWA, he has supervised and co-supervised 16 postdoctoral fellows and 91 PhD, MSc, and Honours theses, significantly impacting the training of economic geologists. His research extends to the Yilgarn Craton in Western Australia and South American regions including the eastern Andes of Peru, northwest Argentina, and Precambrian shields in Brazil and Guyana. Key publications include 'Coupling whole-rock geochemistry with trace elements and S-isotope analyses of pyrite to unravel distinct precipitation processes responsible for the Yaouré gold deposit formation (Côte d’Ivoire, West Africa)' (Mériaud et al., 2026, Mineralium Deposita), 'Petrology and mineralogy of the CuAu fertile, Archaean Burns Porphyry Intrusive Complex, Yilgarn craton, Western Australia' (Witt et al., 2026, Lithos), 'Diverse examples of sodic and sodic–calcic alteration in greenstone rocks and intrusions of the Kalgoorlie–Kurnalpi Rift, Yilgarn Craton: significance for gold mineralisation' (Witt et al., 2025, Australian Journal of Earth Sciences), 'Geologic Setting and Hydrothermal Alteration at the Tucano Gold Deposit in Northern Brazil' (Soares et al., 2025, Economic Geology), and 'Granitoid-Hosted Orogenic Gold Mineralization: Genetic Constraints on the 7.4 Moz Archean Gruyere Gold Deposit, Yilgarn Craton, Western Australia' (Schreefel et al., 2025, Economic Geology). Hagemann contributes as Associate Editor for Mineralium Deposita, Brazilian Journal of Geology, and the Geological Survey of Brazil, enhancing the field's scholarly discourse.
