About Stefan

Honorary Associate Professor Stefan Markowski is an academic in the School of Business at UNSW Canberra, University of New South Wales. He studied mathematical economics at the University of Warsaw, graduating with a Master's degree and a thesis in transport economics in 1966. In 1967, he moved to London to lecture in economics at the London School of Economics, where he completed his economics doctorate in 1974. In 1975, he joined the Centre for Environmental Studies in London as Senior Scientific Officer, later promoted to Principal Scientific Officer specialising in urban and land economics. In 1980, following a secondment to the Department of the Environment, he took up a position as Senior Lecturer in the School of Estate Management at South Bank Polytechnic, now London South Bank University. He was also associated with Roger Tym and Partners, conducting land, housing, transport, and employment studies in the UK.

In 1986-87, Markowski was on sabbatical at the Bureau of Industry Economics in Canberra as Principal Economist, leading a project on technological change in Australian manufacturing. He returned to Australia as a permanent resident in 1988 to join the University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy, now UNSW Canberra, in what was then the School of Economics and Management, now the School of Business. Since 1989, he has consulted for ACIL Tasman and Unisearch. His teaching interests include strategic procurement, logistics engineering and operations management, defence technology management, and defence economics and management. Research specialisations cover private military companies, small arms proliferation, defence procurement, industry policies and trade, international mobility of factors of production, labour mobility, and migration. He is Visiting Professor at the Centre of Migration Research, University of Warsaw, and Adjunct Associate Professor at the Australian National University's Centre for European Studies. Key publications include the edited book Defence Procurement and Industry Policy: A Small Country Perspective (Routledge, 2009, with P.H. Hall and R.C. Wylie), A Comparison of the Defense Acquisition Systems of Australia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and the United States (2000, ed. with B.A. Kausal), 'The AUKUS agreement: a new form of the plurilateral defence alliance? A view from downunder' (Defense & Security Analysis, 2024, with R. Wylie and S. Chand), and 'Augustine Investments and Weapons Systems' (Defence and Peace Economics, 2023, with J. Brauer and K. Hartley).
