Souvick Ghosh is an assistant professor in the School of Information at San José State University, serving as director of the ICANN Lab, which focuses on information retrieval, data science, and deep learning. His research centers on conversational AI, applied and human-centered AI, ethical AI governance, trust in AI systems, and human-AI interaction. Ghosh develops trustworthy conversational systems for decision-making in information-intensive domains, including library systems, archival science, customer service, and sociotechnical challenges. He emphasizes ethical AI deployment, diverse perspectives, and interdisciplinary collaboration with fields like computer science, public health, and political science.
Ghosh earned his PhD from Rutgers University School of Communication and Information, with a doctoral dissertation exploring intelligent functionalities of spoken conversational search systems. Prior thereto, he completed a Bachelor’s and Master’s in computer science. At SJSU, he teaches Information Retrieval System Design (INFO 202, 2021–2025), Problem Solving with Data I & II (INFO 287, 2020–2025), and Math for Machine Learning (INFO 246, 2022–2025). Named SJSU’s inaugural AI Faculty Fellow (2025–2026), he co-developed the Human-Centered AI Certificate, contributes to AI Literacy Essentials, and advances AI integration in education. His over 30 peer-reviewed publications include “Spoken Conversational Search: Evaluating the Effect of System Clarifications on User Experience through Wizard-of-Oz Study” (Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology, 2025), “Exploring the economics of conversational search sessions” (Aslib Journal of Information Management, 2024), “Integrating AI into Library Systems: A Perspective on Applications and Challenges” (ACM/IEEE JCDL, 2024), and influential earlier works like “Searching as learning” (CHIIR, 2018; 128 citations). As co-PI, he secured Mozilla Foundation grants for responsible computing education (2023–2026) and U.S. Department of State funding. Ghosh leads as SIG Cabinet Director (ASIS&T, 2024–2025) and serves on program committees for SIGIR (2022–2025), CHIIR (2020–2025), JCDL, and WebSci.
