Sinclair A. Smith, ScD, is a professor in Health Sciences at Saint Joseph's University, with a distinguished career spanning over 30 years in higher education leadership, teaching, and research. He earned his Doctor of Science degree from Boston University while serving as a non-commissioned officer in the Altitude Physiology and Medicine Division at the US Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine in Massachusetts. Prior to that, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Smith's leadership trajectory includes serving as Chair of the Health Sciences Department and Director of the Doctor of Health Sciences Program at Drexel University until September 2020. In September 2020, he was appointed Dean of the Samson College of Health Sciences at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. Following the merger with Saint Joseph's University in June 2022, he continued in the role of Dean of the School of Health Professions until July 2023.
Throughout his tenure, Professor Smith has taught more than 20 courses covering anatomy, physiology, neuroscience, exercise science, kinesiology, statistics, and research methods. He has mentored over 50 graduate student thesis and dissertation projects, contributing significantly to the development of future scholars in Health Sciences. His scholarly contributions include over 100 peer-reviewed articles, presentations, and book chapters. Smith's research interests center on the effects of dietary supplements and aging on human mitochondrial bioenergetics, investigated through advanced techniques such as near-infrared spectroscopy and magnetic resonance spectroscopy. He is a longstanding member of the American Physiological Society and the American College of Sports Medicine, reflecting his commitment to the field.
