Professor Simon Philbin is Head of the School of Engineering and Professor of Engineering Management at Kingston University London in the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and the Environment, a role he assumed upon joining the university in 2024. Prior to this appointment, he was Professor of Engineering Management at London South Bank University from 2018, where he also served as Interim Dean of the School of Engineering. Philbin held senior management positions at Imperial College London for 15 years from 2003 to 2018. Earlier, he worked at the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency and QinetiQ as a research scientist in the field of energetic materials. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry from the University of Birmingham (1994), a PhD in Chemistry from Brunel University (2001), and an MBA with Distinction from the Open University Business School (2007). Originally trained as a research chemist, Philbin shifted his focus to engineering management, with research interests in project management, systems engineering, research and technology management, innovation management, entrepreneurship, sustainable engineering, environmental management, renewable energy technologies, digital transformation, and engineering education. He has undertaken previous research positions as Visiting Fellow at Imperial College Business School and Visiting Fellow in the School of Business, Economics, and Informatics at Birkbeck, University of London.
Philbin served as President of the American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM) in 2019-2020 and was a member of its Board of Directors from 2014 to 2021. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Fellow of ASEM, Fellow of the Association for Project Management, and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Currently, he is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Engineering Management Journal. His key publications include 'Systemic integration of Artificial Intelligence in financial project management: a systematic literature review and BERTopic-based analysis' (2026, Applied System Innovation), 'Green technology innovation in Chinese construction firms under the low-carbon city pilot policy' (2026, Journal of Asian Economics), 'Modelling, simulation and performance analysis of floating photovoltaic systems - a systematic review and meta-analysis' (2025, Energies), 'Unlocking project success: investigating how senior management support affects the performance of project management and benefits management in IT projects' (2025, Engineering Management Journal), and various editors' introductions for the Engineering Management Journal from 2023 to 2026. Philbin's work has contributed to advancements in engineering management, sustainable technologies, and project performance analysis.
