Sheng Kuan Chung is a Professor of Art Education in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction at the University of Houston College of Education, contributing to Arts and Culture through his leadership in the Art Education/Visual Culture program. He serves as the Art Education/Visual Culture Specialization Lead and Program Lead for the M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction. A graduate of the University of Illinois School of Art and Design, Chung earned his M.A. in Art Education from New York University in 1999 and Ph.D. in Art Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2004. Having worked at the University of Houston for more than 20 years, he trains aspiring and professional art educators while creating his own artwork and publishing extensively in academic journals. Growing up on a remote farm in southern Taiwan, he discovered art as a transformative outlet, inspired by an elementary school teacher, which propelled his three-decade career in art education from kindergarten to graduate levels in Taiwan and the United States. With over 80 published academic articles, Chung has established himself as a prominent scholar whose cross-disciplinary research advances theoretical frameworks and practical applications in contemporary art education.
Chung's research specializations include the integration of emerging digital technologies—such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, digital storytelling, and multimedia—into art education and visual culture, with a focus on innovative post-pandemic learning experiences, Asian aesthetics, cultural studies, and social justice to amplify marginalized voices and foster empathy. He has received major awards, including the National 2014 Ziegfeld Award from the United States Society for Education through Art, the 2019 J. Eugene Grigsby, Jr. Award from the National Art Education Association for service and multicultural advocacy, and the 2025 AACIG Distinguished Scholar Award from NAEA. Chung holds editorial roles as Editor-in-Chief of Arts & Communication and editor for the International Journal of Education through Art, and previously served on the editorial board of NAEA's Art Education journal. Key publications encompass "AI-enhanced visual analysis: Democratizing access and transforming student learning" (International Journal of Arts Education, 2025), "Decolonizing digital spaces: A critical framework for AI in culturally responsive art education" (2025), "The impact of artificial intelligence on art education: A narrative review" (International Journal of Arts Education, 2024), "Satire as a catalyst for creativity, critical thinking, and social awareness" (2023), and "Talking Back with the Work of Aram Han Sifuentes" (Art Education, 2023).
