Shelley M. Brown is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Health Sciences at Boston University’s Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, where she also serves as Director of International Service Learning and Community Engagement since 2015. She joined Boston University in 2006 as Academic Clinical Coordinator and Lecturer in the Health Science Program, advancing to Clinical Instructor from 2008 to 2014, Clinical Assistant Professor since 2014, and recently to Clinical Associate Professor. Brown holds a PhD in Global Governance and Human Security from the University of Massachusetts Boston (2022), an MPH in International Health from Boston University School of Public Health (2007), and a BA in Political Science from Emory University (1999). Prior professional roles include Quality Management Program Coordinator at the Boston Public Health Commission (2004–2005) and Project Coordinator for an HIV/AIDS program in South Africa (2003).
Dr. Brown’s research focuses on the linkages between health, human rights, and social justice, particularly perinatal mental health in low- and middle-income countries, global health governance, health equity, and women’s health. Her publications include “Understanding Perinatal Mental Health as a Global Health Governance Concern in South Africa: Health Provider Perspectives” with Sprague and Lindsay (Global Public Health, 2022); “Health care providers’ perceptions of barriers to perinatal mental healthcare in South Africa” with Sprague (BMC Public Health, 2021); “A Right-to-Health Lens on Perinatal Mental Health Care in South Africa” with MacNaughton and Sprague (Health and Human Rights, 2020); and works on HIV among marginalized U.S. populations, such as “Unmet Mental Health and Social Service Needs of Formerly Incarcerated Women Living with HIV in the Deep South” (Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care, 2018). She has received the BU Pardee Center Faculty Research Fellowship (2019–2021), BU Center for Teaching and Learning STEM Faculty Fellowship (2019–2020), and UMass Boston Center for Peace, Democracy and Development Fellowship (2016–present). Brown developed and teaches courses like Global Mental Health (SAR HS 348) and Global Health Policy & Governance (SAR HS 434), and serves on the Sargent Faculty Council (2019–present).
